1. Separately excited DC motor
The excitation winding is not connected to the armature winding, and the DC motor powered by other DC power supplies is called a separately excited DC motor. Permanent magnet DC motors can also be regarded as separately excited or self-excited DC motors, and are generally directly called permanent magnet excitation methods.

2. Shunt-excited DC motor
The excitation winding of a shunt-excited DC motor is connected in parallel with the armature winding. As a shunt-excited generator, the terminal voltage generated by the motor itself is used to power the excitation winding; as a shunt-excited motor, the excitation winding and the armature share the same power supply, and the performance is the same as that of a separately excited DC motor.

3. Series-excited DC motor
The excitation winding of a series-excited DC motor is connected in series with the armature winding and then connected to a DC power supply. The excitation current of this DC motor is the armature current.

4. Compound-excited DC motor
The compound-excited DC motor has two excitation windings: shunt-excited and series-excited. If the magnetic flux potential generated by the series-excited winding is in the same direction as the magnetic flux potential generated by the shunt-excited winding, it is called product excitation. If the two magnetic flux potentials are in opposite directions, it is called differential excitation.

DC motors with different excitation methods have different characteristics. Generally, the main excitation methods of DC motors are shunt excitation, series excitation and compound excitation, and the main excitation methods of DC generators are separate excitation, shunt excitation and compound excitation.
